HISTORY
Doug’s Bigway
Almost 28 years ago, Doug and Liz Madsen purchased a small grocery store in the town of Boyle Alberta. Doug’s Bigway was officially opened November 3rd, 1977. The store was small and only had two checkouts but they provided the community with fresh produce, quality meats and a good selection of groceries.
Doug’s Super A
By 1991 the business had out-grown its modest beginnings and after several expansions at the original location Doug and Liz decided to build a new store. Along with the new location the name of the business was changed to Doug’s Super A in order to take advantage of the Super A Foods advertising program.
The new store allowed for the addition of a Bakery/Deli, a third checkout and increased selection of both frozen foods and meat.
Aspen AG Foods
On October 31st, 2005 Doug’s Super A was officially renamed Aspen AG Foods. With changes in the food industry, Doug and Liz found themselves no longer to able provide the selection once offered by the Super A Group – they were losing their house brand (West Best). In order to maintain the variety of products that shoppers have grown accustomed to Doug’s Super A became Aspen AG Foods.
This change marks the return of the "Western Family" brand back to the store – the original house brand that Doug and Liz sold when they started out nearly 28 years ago.
In addition the store layout has been modernized to include a customer service area which also serves as an express checkout. The produce section has also been updated and reorganized to provide customers with a larger selection of fresh produce.
